Why we use methylcobalamin instead of cyanocobalamin
Most cheap B12 supplements use cyanocobalamin — a synthetic form your body has to convert before it can use it. Methylcobalamin is the form that's already active in your body's cells, ready to work without extra processing.
B12 is critical for the methylation cycle — a biochemical process essential for liver cell repair, DNA maintenance, and clearing homocysteine (which accumulates when liver function is impaired).
Vegetarians, older adults, and people on metformin or acid-reducing medicines are at higher risk of B12 deficiency. Regular drinkers also deplete B12 faster — which is why Shield has the higher dose (500mcg).

Food interactions
Foods that help or hinder absorption
Foods that help (take WITH these): No specific food requirements. B12 absorbs well with any food.
Be careful with these: If you're taking acid-reducing medicines (omeprazole, pantoprazole), these can reduce B12 absorption from food — but supplemental B12 at this dose is usually adequate.
B12 is found naturally only in animal products (meat, eggs, dairy). Vegetarians and vegans are commonly deficient.

Metformin
Long-term metformin use may reduce B12 absorption. If you're on metformin, the B12 in Libertia may help counter this — but tell your doctor so they can check your B12 levels.
Low — beneficial interaction
Acid reducers (omeprazole, pantoprazole)
These medicines reduce stomach acid, which your body needs to absorb B12 from food. Supplemental B12 at our dose usually overcomes this.

What you might experience
Essentially none
B12 at 250–500mcg has no meaningful side effects. There is no established upper limit for B12 because excess is simply excreted. Some people notice their urine turns pink/red — this is normal with methylcobalamin and harmless.

Indefinite. B12 supplementation is safe for long-term use with no accumulation concerns. Especially important for vegetarians and metformin users.
Who should avoid it
Situations where this ingredient is not appropriate
No significant contraindications: B12 at supplemental doses is safe for virtually everyone. It has no established toxicity level. People with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy should consult their doctor (very rare genetic condition).

What's wrong with regular B12 (cyanocobalamin)?+
Cyanocobalamin works — but it needs to be converted by your body into methylcobalamin before it can be used. This conversion requires energy and liver function. For someone with fatty liver, using the already-active form (methylcobalamin) removes one unnecessary step. Cyanocobalamin also releases a tiny amount of cyanide during conversion — harmless in practice, but why choose it when the active form is available?
I'm vegetarian. Is this dose enough?+
250–500mcg daily is generally adequate for vegetarians. If you're strictly vegan and have never supplemented B12, your doctor may recommend a higher initial dose to replenish depleted stores, then maintain with our dose.
