How it works

What makes astaxanthin special

Astaxanthin is the red-orange pigment that makes salmon and flamingos pink. It's produced naturally by a microalgae called Haematococcus pluvialis. It's one of the most powerful antioxidants ever studied — research suggests it may be many times more potent than Vitamin C or Vitamin E at neutralising certain types of oxidative damage.

For liver health, astaxanthin crosses easily into liver cells and may protect them from the oxidative stress that occurs when your liver is under chronic strain from fat, inflammation, or toxins.

We use natural astaxanthin from algae — not the synthetic version found in cheaper supplements. Natural astaxanthin is estimated to be approximately 20× more potent than synthetic. At 12mg daily, this is the clinical dose used in most research studies.

Part of The 4-System Protocol™ In the Libertia Softgel, astaxanthin works alongside omega-3, tocotrienol, and CoQ10 as part of the oil-based antioxidant and liver fat reduction system — complementing the capsule's 4-System Protocol.
When to take it

Best timing for maximum benefit

🍽️
Alternative: with biggest meal
If bedtime doesn't work, take with your fattiest meal of the day.
Missed a dose?
Take with your next meal containing fat.
Food interactions

Foods that help or hinder absorption

Foods that help (take WITH these): Fat-containing food is critical. Without fat, astaxanthin absorption is very poor. Nuts, milk, dahi, ghee, eggs — any fat source works.
Be careful with these: No significant food interactions. Taking without fat significantly reduces absorption.
How long to take it

Duration of use

Can be taken long-term. No accumulation or tolerance concerns at 12mg daily. Continue for as long as you're on the Classic or Pro protocol, or indefinitely for general antioxidant support.

Who should avoid it

Situations where this ingredient is not appropriate

On chemotherapy: Consult your oncologist. Antioxidants may interfere with certain chemotherapy mechanisms.

Allergic to algae or seafood: Astaxanthin is from microalgae (Haematococcus pluvialis). If you have a known algae allergy, avoid it. The Softgel also contains fish oil and fish gelatin — separate allergen.

Pregnant or breastfeeding: Limited data on supplemental astaxanthin during pregnancy. Consult your obstetrician.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Astaxanthin

Is 12mg of astaxanthin safe?+
Yes. Studies have examined doses up to 40mg daily without safety concerns. 12mg is the standard clinical dose. The most notable effect at this dose is a possible mild pink tint to palms in fair-skinned people — harmless and reversible.
Why natural and not synthetic astaxanthin?+
Natural astaxanthin from algae is estimated to be approximately 20× more potent than the synthetic version. The chemical structure is slightly different — natural astaxanthin includes esterified forms that your body absorbs and uses more effectively. The price difference per capsule is small relative to the potency difference.
