How it works
How BioPerine makes curcumin work better
Curcumin on its own is very poorly absorbed — most of what you swallow passes through your body without being used. Your liver quickly breaks down curcumin and prepares it for excretion before it has a chance to do its job.
Piperine (from black pepper) slows down this breakdown process by temporarily inhibiting certain liver enzymes (particularly CYP3A4 and glucuronidation). This gives curcumin more time in your bloodstream to reach your liver cells and do its anti-inflammatory work.
Published research suggests piperine may increase curcumin bioavailability by approximately 2,000% (20×). This is why Classic pairs curcumin with BioPerine — and why Pro doesn't need it (Meriva phytosome achieves 29× through a completely different, non-enzyme-inhibiting mechanism).
Part of The 4-System Protocol™ In Libertia Classic, BioPerine is a support ingredient that enables "System 2: Fight inflammation" by making curcumin absorption viable. It's not in Pro because phytosome technology handles absorption differently.
When to take it
Best timing for maximum benefit
🍽️
With food (inside capsule)
BioPerine is inside the Classic capsule — no separate timing needed. Take your Classic capsule with food as usual.
🔄
No separate dosing
You don't take BioPerine separately. It's pre-combined with the other Classic ingredients.
⏰
Missed a dose?
Take with your next meal as usual.
Food interactions
Foods that help or hinder absorption
Foods that help (take WITH these): No specific food requirements for BioPerine itself. The curcumin it supports absorbs better with fat-containing meals.
Be careful with these: BioPerine can affect how your body processes several things — not just curcumin. See the drug interaction section for details. This is the main reason we include it with caution and only in Classic.
The piperine in your cooking spices (black pepper on food) is at much lower concentrations than in BioPerine® and doesn't significantly affect drug metabolism.
If you take any of these medicines, talk to your doctor first
Statins (atorvastatin, simvastatin)
Piperine inhibits CYP3A4 — the same enzyme that processes these statins. Combined with berberine (also in Classic, which also affects CYP3A4), the effect on your statin could be significant. Your doctor should be aware.
High — doctor must review
Many CYP3A4-metabolised medicines
Piperine can slow down how your liver processes a wide range of medicines metabolised by CYP3A4 — including some blood pressure medicines, anti-anxiety drugs, and certain antibiotics. If you're on multiple medications, discuss Classic with your doctor or pharmacist.
Moderate — review all medicines
Rezdiffra (resmetirom)
If you're on Rezdiffra AND a statin AND Classic (which has both piperine and berberine), you have a three-way interaction. Specialist supervision required.
High — specialist only
What you might experience
Rare at 10mg
BioPerine at 10mg daily is generally well tolerated. Mild stomach warmth has been reported occasionally. The main 'side effect' is its drug interaction profile — it's the interactions, not direct effects, that require caution.
How long to take it
Duration of use
Used as part of Classic's 6–12 month course. Not taken separately or indefinitely.
Note: BioPerine's enzyme-inhibiting effects are temporary and reverse when you stop taking it.
Who should avoid it
Situations where this ingredient is not appropriate
Do NOT take if: On Rezdiffra + statin combination without specialist supervision.
On multiple medications metabolised by CYP3A4: Piperine slows down CYP3A4, which processes a large number of common medicines. If you're on several medications, consult your doctor or pharmacist before starting Classic.
Rezdiffra + statin combination: Triple interaction risk. Specialist supervision only.

Frequently asked questions
Common questions about BioPerine®
Why doesn't Pro have BioPerine?+
Pro uses Meriva® curcumin phytosome — which achieves approximately 29× better absorption through phospholipid wrapping, not enzyme inhibition. Meriva doesn't need BioPerine, and adding it would create unnecessary drug interactions without additional benefit.
Does the black pepper in my food do the same thing?+
Not significantly. The amount of piperine in a pinch of black pepper on your food is far too low to meaningfully inhibit CYP3A4 or boost curcumin absorption. BioPerine® is a concentrated extract standardised to 95% piperine — much more potent than dietary pepper.
Is BioPerine safe?+
At 10mg daily, direct side effects are minimal. The concern is its drug interaction profile — piperine can affect how your body processes many medicines. If you're on prescription medications, the interaction risk is the main consideration. This is why we limit BioPerine to Classic only and include comprehensive drug interaction warnings on the product page.
