How it works

What taurine does for active drinkers

Taurine is a conditional amino acid — your body can make some, but not always enough, especially under stress or alcohol consumption. It plays several roles relevant to drinkers.

In the brain, taurine supports neurotransmitter function and may help with the cognitive sluggishness (brain fog) experienced after drinking. In the liver, it helps form bile acids — which are essential for fat digestion and toxin clearance. And systemically, it supports cell hydration — helping counteract the dehydrating effects of alcohol.

Taurine is commonly found in energy drinks (at doses of 1,000–2,000mg). In Shield, we use 200mg daily (400mg on heavy days) — a lower dose focused on its liver and brain support properties rather than the stimulant effect energy drinks aim for.

Part of The 4-System Protocol™ In Libertia Shield, taurine is part of "System 3: Morning comfort" — alongside prickly pear (inflammation) and ginger (nausea).

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Taurine

Is this the same taurine in energy drinks?+
Same molecule, much lower dose. Energy drinks typically contain 1,000–2,000mg of taurine alongside caffeine and sugar. Shield contains 200mg (up to 400mg on heavy days) without caffeine — focused on liver and brain support rather than the stimulant effect.
Is taurine safe?+
Very safe. Taurine has been studied extensively and is naturally present in your body and in food. The European Food Safety Authority reviewed taurine safety and found no concerns at supplemental doses up to 3,000mg daily — 7–15× our dose.
