NAC is a form of the amino acid cysteine. Your body converts it into glutathione — the single most important antioxidant and detoxification molecule in your liver. Think of glutathione as the "master janitor" that cleans up toxins, neutralises damaging molecules, and protects your liver cells from injury.
People with fatty liver often have depleted glutathione levels. NAC provides the rate-limiting building block your body needs to make more of it.

Why not just take glutathione directly?
Oral glutathione supplements are poorly absorbed — most breaks down in your stomach before reaching your liver. NAC survives digestion and reaches your cells intact, where your body converts it into glutathione on-site. This is why NAC is generally considered a more reliable way to raise glutathione levels than taking glutathione itself.

When to take it
Evening meal is preferred — but any meal works

Evening meal (preferred)
Your liver does most of its repair work during sleep. Taking NAC in the evening means cysteine is available when glutathione production peaks overnight.

With food (recommended)
NAC can be taken with or without food, but taking with a meal reduces the chance of mild stomach discomfort. Fat content of the meal doesn't matter as much as with other ingredients.

Can open capsule
If the capsule is too large to swallow, you can open it and mix the powder with soft food — yoghurt, banana, or dahi. The taste is slightly sulphurous but mild. Do not crush or chew.
Food interactions
NAC has fewer food interactions than most ingredients
No specific food requirements. Unlike silymarin or berberine, NAC doesn't need fat for absorption. You can take it with any meal — roti, rice, salad, fruit. Consistency matters more than meal type.
One food to time separately: If you take activated charcoal for any reason (some people take it for gas or bloating), don't take it within 2 hours of NAC. Charcoal can absorb NAC in your gut before your body gets to use it.

NAC has one critical interaction and a few mild ones
Nitroglycerin / nitrate heart medicines
This is the most important interaction. NAC can increase the blood-vessel-widening effect of nitroglycerin and other nitrate medicines (isosorbide mononitrate, isosorbide dinitrate). This can cause your blood pressure to drop dangerously low, leading to severe headache, dizziness, or fainting. If you take any nitrate medicine for heart conditions, do not take NAC without your cardiologist's explicit approval.

NAC may add a small extra blood-pressure-lowering effect. Not usually dangerous, but worth knowing — especially if your BP tends to run low already.

Activated charcoal
Charcoal absorbs NAC before your body can use it. If you take activated charcoal supplements, take them at least 2 hours apart from your Lite capsule.

Multivitamins
Libertia Lite already contains Vitamin D (1000 IU), zinc (8.5mg), B6, B12, and folate. If you also take a multivitamin, check you're not doubling up on these nutrients. Your doctor or pharmacist can advise.

NAC is generally very well tolerated
Uncommon (1 in 20–30)
Mild stomach discomfort — nausea or slight cramping, especially in the first few days. Taking with food usually prevents this. Resolves quickly.
Sulphurous body odour — NAC is a sulphur-containing amino acid. A small number of people notice a faint sulphur smell in their sweat or breath. Mild and usually unnoticeable to others.
Rare (1 in 500+)
Headache — occasionally reported, usually mild and temporary.
Skin rash — very rare. If it occurs, stop taking and see your doctor.
Hospital context: NAC has been used intravenously in hospitals for decades at doses of 2,000–3,000mg to treat paracetamol overdose. At Lite's 500mg oral dose, it is well within established safety margins. Side effects at this dose are uncommon and generally minor.
How long to take it
NAC is designed for long-term daily use
Unlike berberine (which is used in courses), NAC at 500mg daily is intended for ongoing use. Glutathione needs constant replenishment — it's consumed every time your liver processes toxins, which is every day.
Month 1–2: Glutathione levels begin recovering. You probably won't feel anything specific — and that's normal.
Month 3–6: If combined with diet and exercise, your doctor may see improvements in liver enzymes and oxidative stress markers.
Month 6+: Continue as long as you're on Libertia Lite. Published data has not shown issues with long-term oral NAC at this dose. No cycling or breaks needed.
Who should avoid it
Situations where NAC is not appropriate
Do NOT take NAC if: You are on nitroglycerin or any nitrate medicine for heart conditions. This is a significant interaction that could cause dangerous drops in blood pressure. See the drug interactions section above.
Pregnant or breastfeeding: Limited data on oral NAC during pregnancy at supplemental doses. Consult your obstetrician before taking.
Asthma (in some people): There are rare reports of NAC triggering bronchospasm in people with severe asthma. If you have asthma, mention it to your doctor before starting.
Bleeding disorders: NAC may mildly affect platelet function. If you have a diagnosed bleeding disorder, consult your doctor.
